Step 1: The Show Idea and Premise [ edit ]In the first episode of a show, the writers will introduce their characters and the premise at hand. It is important to remember that your premise is what will carry your audience through an entire season. Broadly speaking, your show should revolve around a set of characters

 with a common trait (e.g. three brothers who all want to be successful), or around a goal or dream that the main character strives for (e.g. raising funds for a school). While there are exceptions to this rule (such as Mr Robot), it is less risky if you stick to this formula while writing your script.

Step 2: Introduce the Cast [ edit ]It's important to have at least one main character and many sub-characters. In a sitcom, the main character is always male (although female leads are common nowadays), and he will act as the voice of the audience,

 who can understand his comedic actions, emotions, thoughts and speech patterns. The show needs to be set around that single protagonist. The rest of your cast must be essential to forming this comedic unit with the main character.

The first step in introducing the cast is to introduce their names (welcome back to school or work day!). However, this is not the only thing you

will tell the audience about your characters! In order to make your characters likeable to your audience, it is best to tell them something else about them as well.

For example, in the first episode of Friends, Monica and Rachel's apartment door has an unoriginal number 104.

 In season 7 we find out that Monica changed the number (to 221) because she was tired of people being unoriginal and saying that her apartment had an unlucky number for a door. This is an excellent example of how you can use your show to give more information about your character.

You can also use this knowledge to juxtapose the character later on in the show. For example, in season 5 Ross reveals that Monica changed the door number because she wanted to highlight how individuals are obnoxious by having their doors have an unlucky number.

When Monica (who is supposed to be obsessed with common sense) reveals that her friends care more about superstitions than common sense, it makes her look stupid and dim-witted.

If you don't want your characters to look stupid or dumb by revealing too much information about them (such as in The Big Bang Theory), then you will need to build up suspense later on and tell the audience nothing more until they've TV  just watched a funny event happen.
